About

THE INSTITUTE

The Positive Leadership Development Institute (PLDI) has been offering life-changing in-person trainings in English since 2006 in Ontario, 2009 in British Columbia, and in French since 2018 in Quebec. Those trainings are now also offered in a dynamic online format available to emerging HIV-positive leaders throughout Canada.

In-person trainings are 2-4 days while online trainings require 12-16 hours of commitment over 3 weeks. To access advanced training and workshop offers, one must first graduate from our Core training, whether it be online or in-person.

PARTICIPANTS

The PLDI program is for all people living with HIV who would like to be a leader. A learning path in the Institute necessarily begins with Core Training: Who am I as a leader? Trainings are intensive and space-limited. If you are interested in the PLDI program, we ask you to be aware of and respect the following:

  • It is essential to really commit to the training and to be available during the entire training.
  • Any application must be supported by a health professional, a social worker, or a community worker who thereby validates the person’s HIV status
  • Space is limited, some people may end up on a waiting list until they have a place in another group
  • The groups of participants are selected to ensure a diversity of experiences and realities
  • It is recommended to have physical and mental health that allows full participation in the activities
  • PLDI trainings are not designed to help people living with HIV live better with their diagnoses, nor do they offer therapeutic intervention. These are leadership trainings.

FAQ

HIV status and eligibility

Is PLDI leadership trainings only for people living with HIV (PLHIV)? Is it only for PLHIV that live in Canada?

-Yes, PLDI is by and for PLHIV only. We appreciate our allies, but the common HIV status and experience of resiliency is the core from which we build our leadership journey.

-All participants must have a health professional, a social worker or a community worker support a candidate’s application in terms of leadership potential and HIV status.

-In-person PLDI trainings are usually offered within the 3 provinces of our Alliance (Ontario, British-Columbia, and Quebec) and online trainings are to be available to PLHIV of Canada by 2022.

-If you are a group or an organization from another province or outside of Canada and have funding ideas on bringing PLDI to your folks; reach out to the National Coordinator: info@pldi.ca. Specific individual situations can also inquire directly by email.

-For folks from Australia and New Zealand, you may reach out directly to your PLDI chapter there: pldiaustralia.org.au.

Leadership training impact

Is what you learn at PLDI trainings only relevant to getting involved in AIDS service organizations (ASOs) and community-based organizations (CBOs)?

-In PLDI trainings, the history and strength of the HIV community is part of the curriculum and these teachings can be quite relevant to getting involved in ASOs and CBOs.

-The teachings can also be inspiring and applicable to any other field, even outside the non-profit world.

-PLDI leadership and communications skills include proven methods that are applicable in any field with a focus on the primary tool of leadership: developing oneself.

Online vs in-person training

What are the differences between online and in-person trainings? Can I take both?

I have already taken PLDI Core training a long time ago; may I register for the new online training?

-Both online and in-person trainings include facilitated group sessions by our certified trainers and are built upon the same curriculum.

-Space and funding is limited, participants are to choose the better delivery method for them, when applicable. Leadership journeys through the Institute ultimately offers the possibility of combining different delivery methods of trainings, where applicable.

-Please see the pldi.ca/apply page for more details on the delivery method of each training.
